Writing is scary for most people. Whenever you ask someone to consider writing, usually they reply that they cannot write or they don’t have what it takes to be a writer.
Surprising, yes, but understandable.
See, when you ask someone to become a writer, the first thought that comes to their mind is that either they should start a blog or they should write a book. In both cases, they feel that they will expose themselves to the world. They think that they will reveal themselves to the negative and hateful people who are always searching their next target. The fear of being judged continuously is real. But, do you have to write publicly and should you care about what other people think?
Why Writing Matters?
Before we discuss whether we should care about what other people think, let us first understand why writing matters and why you should consider writing.
For me, writing is the best way of expressing yourself. You have many ideas, experiences, wisdom to share, and there are people just like you, who could use your perspective. The best thing about writing is that you don’t need much. You can leave me for weeks with a notebook and a pen, and I will fill it up with words for you. That is the magic of writing.
You are free. You can create worlds, explore concepts and even discover yourself, just by doing one thing – WRITING!
Writing brings out the best and the worst out of you. But what is so magical about this is that when you are done writing something, you feel light, happy and content.
And you don’t necessarily have to make your writing public and don’t need to publish everything you write. I still maintain a personal journal. See, the point is to write as much as you can and about everything that comes to your mind. Some topics will be more exciting, and you will write more about them, even start a blog or better, write a book. Other topics would just be worth a paragraph or even a sentence. Doesn’t matter really, as long as you write it down.
Writing helps you declutter your mind. The simple act of writing down your thoughts not only helps you to get it out of mind but also help you understand yourself. There are so many things that I discovered about myself and others when I started writing.
Some might argue that writing is an art and not everyone will be good at it.
Agreed. But does it have to be that way? Like any skill, writing can be improved over time, and anyone who wants to be a writer can become one! The trick is to get started.
Always remember, that we created the language and no one is born with the knowledge of the language, we learn it over the years. Same goes with writing, the more you write, the better you will get. Yes, few have the rare talent to play with the words in surprising and exciting ways, but even those individuals got better over time. You have to set yourself free and start writing.

What should you write?
Well, you can write about anything. There are no limitations. You can write about anything. You can start by writing about your day and slowly make it more complex by writing about your thoughts, emotions.
The reason I suggest to start by writing personal things is simple, it’s your perspective and no one but you can write about it and do complete justice. Once you are comfortable with personal things, you can write about the things and concepts that matters and interests you the most. Be it programming, productivity, personal development, relationships, or anything else, if you find it interesting, try writing about it.
Don’t know where to start? No worries, chances are you are already reading the articles and books on the subject written by others. Research how they began, what were the topics they wrote about. Still finding it difficult, take one article that you like and write the way you would have written, for practice. This will give you a good idea on how people write on the topics that you find interesting.
What about the haters?
What about them? I am kidding. 🙂
As I said, there are many people out there who are waiting to find their next target. Your haters will find you, eventually. But, always remember that your haters are your biggest fans!
Having said that, you will be surprised to find how many people will relate to your content. There are so many people out there who are incredibly supportive and kind. The writing community welcomes everyone. Every one who is an established writer knows that they were once in your shoes and they will help if you reach out.
Also, we need more perspective. See, so much has been written on every topic that you might find hard to stand out, to be unique. But the thing is, people love new perspectives on the things that they already know. If your audience likes your perspective and can relate to what you share, they will keep coming back for more.
Just be honest when you write. Writing is about you and most of your readers will search for your voice in your content. It is entirely ok to be inspired but when you do write, make it yours.

You might think that you are not a writer or you cannot write. Let me tell you that you have everything it takes to be a writer. You need to start. If you don’t want to share your thoughts and opinions with others, its ok. Just don’t give up on writing. I believe that everyone should become a writer because we need more perspective, we need more ideas, we need more opinions and most importantly, we want to know what you have to say!
