Why Time Management Is Easy To Teach And Difficult To Learn?


A few years back I attended a seminar on Time Management. The concept taught and discussed was something that most people, including me, already knew, yet, here I was with hundreds of more knowledge seeking people to learn about time management.

Yesterday, I found the brochure for that seminar, and it got me thinking that whether time management, like other skills, can be taught and if yes, is it easy to learn?

Before answering whether time management can be taught and whether it is easy to learn, we first need to understand why time management is essential and why most people struggle to efficiently manage their time.

Why Time Management is Important?

We all have 24 hours in a day, yet some of us manage to achieve more, be more happy and content than others. Why is that? Why do people like Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs, Warren Buffet were able to achieve so much and be huge successes while others are struggling to survive? Why some people can efficiently run a company and even a country while others hardly manage to excel at work?

Sure, people might argue that these people have a huge team that helps them get more done and I agree, however, having a group of talented professionals working with you does not guarantee that you will be successful.

For years, people have searched for the answers, and many have found their way around to be successful. However, most people still struggle to understand what makes a person successful.

Is it because the successful people know something we don’t? Or we don’t have what it takes to be successful?

Most people are stuck in self-doubt and crave success, but they don’t find a way to be successful. What most people fail to understand is that successful people take control of their time. Their ability to get so much done is hidden in the way they handle their time.

Why People Struggle to Manage their Time Efficiently?

Since the past few decades, the concept of time management has spread like wildfire. Whether you are a student getting your degree or an entrepreneur scaling up your business, the better you understand the concept of time management, the higher your chances are to succeed.

The concept of time management is both exciting and daunting. For someone who is just starting out, these things can be overwhelming and confusing.

Personal development experts have shared strategies for decades to help people manage their time efficiently and become more productive. Still, if you are a beginner, you might find yourself lost in the ocean of information available on the topic.

You can go ahead and try these strategies, and while some might work for you, most of them require a lot of efforts and tweaking for these strategies to work for you. Even after you try these strategies, you will find yourself lost in the crowd. There is a reason for this failure, and it all has to do with our approach towards time management.

Many of these strategies fail to take into account the human mind and its ability to get lost in the pollution of distractions. Staying focused is something people are struggling with, and now there is a sudden shift of focus from time management to mind management!

The theory is Easy, Practical Application is Difficult!

As mentioned earlier, you can find many resources to help you with time management, but you will still find it challenging to manage your time. The reason for this is simple, we all know most of the strategies that can help us better manage our time. We all have read so much on the topic of time management that we can even teach others. Where we fail is the practice of time management.

Explaining the solution, in theory, is easy, but implementing it in our lives is the problematic part. Even if we know that we need to plan in advance to better manage our time, we find it difficult to implement it.

The reason for this is our preconceived notions and existing habitual behaviors. We can learn a lot on the topic but when it comes to implementation, the practical application of what we learn, we fall prey to procrastination. One of the reasons for this might be our poor understanding of habits.

Like anything else, we need consistent practice to make the activities that make managing our time easier, a habit. Once we have programmed those activities as habitual behaviors, time management would be easier than it is today.

Final Thoughts

Like any skill, time management can be taught. However, the practical implementation is something that requires efforts. It will not be comfortable if your current behavior and habits are counterproductive. People can show you everything, but it is you who needs to take actions. With consistent actions, you can change the way you manage your time.
